The Spyderco Military, first released in 1996, was Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser’s answer to the question, "If your son were going into the military, what folding knife would you send him with?"
The Military, given the state-of-the-art at the time of its creation, was an elegant solution: it offered a lot of reach and cutting edge length, while keeping weight reasonable and not compromising on strength, with quite thick steel liners providing the basis for its Walker LinerLock. Anyone who has had to hump an assault pack to an objective knows how much weight matters; and at 4.5 ounces for 4 inches of blade and a very generous 5.5 inches of handle, the Military is quite an efficient carry. And don’t let anybody tell you otherwise: CPM-S30V, properly heat-treated, is still a great steel in 2026.
Of course, the Military 2 is a thing now. It is, in some ways, a better version of the Military, with a stronger lock and a wider variety of steel options. But if we go back to that original question asked of Sal Glesser in 1996, I think the original LinerLock Military is still just as good of an answer. The gap in strength between the Military’s Walker LinerLock and the Military 2’s Compression Lock, in my opinion, resides mostly in a theoretical space, and the more subtle contours of the original Military handle make it more slightly accommodating for different grips.
The fact that Spyderco keeps the original Military in production despite the fact that the Military 2 is now a thing, I think, is a testament to the original’s continued relevance and utility.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Military 2 (I have a Military 2 Salt that is my primary outdoors/gardening folder), but the old-school Military is a great work folder on its own merits, with legacy and history behind it.
