The Hogue Deka folder with a polymer/grivory handle is undoubtedly one of the best values in US-made pocket knives, rivaled only by the Spyderco Para 3 LW Salt and the Spyderco Native 5 LW Salt. There are cheaper US-made folders, of course, but as far as I am aware, none come with CPM MagnaCut as the standard blade steel, at least at the time of this writing.
The value of the Deka isn’t just a matter of materials, though. Its design is the brainchild of acclaimed custom knifemaker Allen Elishewitz, who specializes in tactical/defensive knives. Elishewitz’s work is informed by his varied experiences as a Recon Marine and Deep Recon Platoon Leader (C Company, 4th Recon Bn), lifelong martial arts practitioner (kali/eskrima, muay thai, karate, Northern shaolin boxing), and a formally trained fine artist (illustration, painting, engraving, and guilloche). Executing Elishewitz’s design is the firearms accessory maker Hogue, whose knifemaking division is known for the elevated build quality of their output: indeed, samples of their MagnaCut knives have consistently tested out as being between 62 and 64 hRC in hardness, putting them on par with the MagnaCut blades produced by industry leaders such as Spyderco and Chris Reeve Knives.
In use, the Deka Wharncliffe is a reasonably versatile cutter. Unlike a typical straight Wharncliffe, the Deka’s edge actually has an angle at its midpoint. This angle lets the Deka approximate the cutting dynamics of a blade with a belly during cutting against a flat surface, while still retaining the efficiency of a true Wharncliffe when performing longitudinal cuts and slashes. The Deka is also extremely lightweight, and it carries very well due to its slim profile. That same slimness means the Deka isn’t the most comfortable knife for extended use with a really tight grip, but depending on one’s most common cutting tasks, this may or may not be an issue. As a bonus, the reversible pocket clip and cross-bar lock make the Deka a truly ambidextrous folder.
All in all, the Deka Wharncliffe with polymer handles is an excellent folder that offers outstanding value and performance.
